There's some good stuff going on here, but the film just never quite comes together. The Addiction presents some interesting philosophical and societal issues, as well as a slightly new take on vampirism, but it's ultimately crushed under its own weight. There are too many directions in which the film wants to go, and it suffers from pretension more than once. However, the cinematography is appropriately stark, and Lili Taylor and Christopher Walken (the latter in an all-too-brief appearance) turn in great performances. (Feb 5, 1999)
