Orchestral and ambient score to the movie Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.

Carter Burwell's score for Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is a masterpiece of simplicity and innovative composing. In weaving the sounds of traditional and contemporary instruments together with simple percussions and sounds of nature, Burwell has achieved an ambient album powerful with tone. Tracks one and two, "Rock Water Wind" and "Funny Farm" are two good examples of that musical concept--the first is composed of incidental noises with musical undertones and the second is a driving force accompanied by noises both natural and unnatural. (And after all, doesn't the act of forcing natural sounds to be organized render them vaguely unnatural?)
Though he does develop a few melodies for Blair Witch 2 (my favorite track, in fact, is the exotic and intoxicating "Barely"), Burwell doesn't depend much on themes for this score. Some of the themes he has composed, though, such as the unsettling thrust of "Funny Farm" and the descending notes of "Stream Dream," slip back into the music later in the album. In fact, as the album moves forward, indulging in more and more chaos, it both echoes itself and borrows ideas from the movie that inspired it. By the last two tracks, the album has purposefully descended into a musical depiction of desperation that ends in a hopeless scream of loss. One of the best scores in memory.
