Reviews SUBMIT YOUR REVIEW Jack Witzig Apr 29, 2002 RATING Out of 100 50 Like a good portion of his other work, Patrick Doyle's score for Hamlet often sounds thin, as if he refused to utilize the entire orchestra. Only occasionally does he utilize the strength of which he's showed he's capable (listen to his work for Needful Things) without overshooting into bombastry. Doyle does his best when keeping it simple, as in tracks five and ten (the latter provides an underscore to Hamlet's "to be or not to be" speech that, in the movie, is subdued and lets the attention be on Kenneth Branagh's acting). Another track, "Oh Here They Come" begins as a lively piece, and acts as a break from the rest of the album. By and large, though, this doesn't sound as good as Doyle's better efforts.
