Much of Music of the Vampires goes straight for the jugulars of fans of Anne Rice's sensual vampires. The dominant visualization Vampires intends to invoke is a dark, tortured, forelorn man standing high on a windswept balcony, in the light of a full moon, surveying all that he reluctantly rules. The sweeping, gothic, romantic themes are corny, but acceptable. Some of them are even vaguely sad. What is not acceptable are the tracks that are drum-machine driven soft-core porno jazz. Including sound effects and movie quotes are a minor misstep as well. It's good to hear a little from Frank Langella, but I felt the inclusion of Bela Lugosi's Dracula isn't quite in keeping with the feel of the album. Then again, hey, it's in the public domain, right?
