If Carter Burwell's score to Blair Witch 2 was subtle, this is practically subliminal. Much of this album is composed of low, sustained notes broken occasionally by screeches that might be intended to make the listener jump, but didn't, in my case. It's like a classy version of the CDs of "haunted house sounds" you can pick up at dollar stores every October. However, as the album movies forward, its good use of bass notes, clipped organic noises, and what sounds like electronically altered dog barks and growls add up to a moderately unsettling experience. As of this writing, I haven't yet seen the movie, though before the week's out, I will have. As I stand, I'd judge that perhaps too much of this album is dedicated to low-level atmospherics and not enough to effect. It's like Penderecki's score in The Shining without the punch.
