After reviewing a bunch of these Halloween sound effects CDs, I've come to a conclusion: none of them are that scary. Discs like Scary Halloween, I think, have more of the right idea: structure your sound effects around a central theme. Spooky Scary Sounds for Halloween is definitely part of the other, larger camp that involves a whole bunch of sound effects, each thrown in pretty much at random every few minutes. This disc is one of the better ones, though--by not attempting to be a terribly frightful experience, it achieves an odd comfort level. This is definitely a disc that could be used to create ambiance at, say, a town firehall's haunted house. And although it didn't affect my above rating, I liked the ideas for holding a Halloween party that were contained in the liner notes. Not bad, Martha.
