Most of Poe's stories are excellent tales, and the three included on this album--The Premature Burial, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Tell-Tale Heart--are good examples of their kind. However, it is the stories alone that listeners will find, because they have been edited to make the language more palatable for the ears of today. The adaptations aren't bad, really, and they benefit from enthusastic narration. However, Tales from Beyond does subject Poe's text to a few questionable alterations and one unforgiveable one--why change the final line of The Tell-Tale Heart from "the beating of his hideous heart!" to "the beating of this rotten heart"? In the final analysis, the effect of this telling of the tales really just made me want to reexperience Poe's original words. The remaining tracks are collections of sound effects, none of which are terribly involving.
