The basis for dozens of works, everything from books to movies to television programs, and The Amityville Horror, the book, is remarkably . . . uninspiring. Author Jay Anson presents the narrative in an appropriate episodic format, but its effectiveness is limited by his prose, which seems to be written for teenagers. This book has just enough embellishment to rob it of verisimilitude but yet not enough excitement to render it entertaining reading in a fictional sense.
