This book, the third of the Doctor Who range, is overall very much a horror story. Indeed, it is written by an established horror author. This early on the charaters are still being defined but still grip you. The main appeal of this novel is the atmosphere, and what an atmosphere it is! Morris brilliantly creates the image of victorian London in your head, from the sewage-filled streets to the dangerous, mechanical workhouses. His description of a man infected by gangreen is sickening!

As this is part of a Science Fiction range of novels, it eventually does provide the twist, but the creatures behind the scenes are horrific in appearance terrifyingly described. A brilliant book so soon in the series and an excellent horror novel in its own right. Recommended. (Nov 16, 2000)
