|
Twenty years after witnessing her mother's murder, a woman is haunted by the memory of that act. To make matters worse, she starts to think the killer, an ex-clown who is now dressing the part, is coming back . . . to get her.

How do you update a quirky and unique classic like Carnival of Souls? For that matter, why? I don't know why, but as to how, well, the answer turned out to be this: you ditch any and all subtlety and swipe a few tricks from Jacob's Ladder in the process. And, as it turns out, the result is a decent way to kill an hour and a half but nowhere near the minor classic the original was. In this remake, the symbols--especially water, water everywhere--are a bit too obvious, and you need two hands to count the opportunities that the filmmakers should have taken but didn't (or shouldn't have taken but did). There are also scenes that are thrown in for no reason except shock value, including a "degrading" sex scene of the type that played a pivotal part in Kubrick's Shining but seems to be here as an excuse to gross people out. And to show off Bobbie Phillips' thigh-high clad legs. Still, I liked the parts that took place at the nearly-deserted carnival--nice bit of atmospheric filmmaking there.
