I can't rate this one. On one hand, you have a barely interesting story acted by a bunch of amateurs, only a few of which show glimmers of talent. The plot is what I'd call "underexplored" and "unexplained," with characters doing things that make no sense (including a totally gratuitous scene involving a woman stripping to her underwear). On the other hand, Copperhead also features what certainly appears to be the slaughter of a lot of innocent snakes. I was reminded, actually, of a film called Cannibal Ferox. I could give Cannibal Ferox a rating because, basically, it let me cop out, in a way--it was so horrible that the vicious and apparently real animal killings were a barely-needed excuse to give it the failing grade it deserved. Copperhead is, in a strange way, a better film--at least it's not as boring--and that's why my moral objections would get in the way of giving it an objective rating. So there you go, I guess . . . figure my review out for yourselves, if you care to. (Sep 21, 1999) | ||||||
