This film isn't a an astounding Romero classic like Dawn of the Dead, but it has some very nice moments in it. The horror in The Crazies is more realistic and just plain human than that of a lot of other films--it's about mass hysteria, riot mentality, and all the harm that can come from it, not to mention how the government and military can really muck up something. There are scenes in this film that show what a master Romero is at creating frustration in the minds of his audience (and I mean that in a good way). In the end, this film isn't terribly involving, but it provides more food for thought than is immediately apparent.(Aug 26, 1999)
