An example of how it is possible to take a great cast, have each member give a solid performance, and still wind up with a decidedly underwhelming result. All of the actors seem to know they're in a kitchy, trashy film (especially Dylan McDermott, who does himself proud here), but their self-appraisal doesn't make the script any better. My impression of Destiny is that it's merely an updated, too-hip-for-its-own-good version of the giant, sprawling, mostly unfunny anyway comedies of decades past, like The Cannonball Run and Speed Zone. There's a lot of quirky energy here, but it's completely undirected, making Destiny seem like nothing so much as a movie that's desperate to be cool. And as Carlin's said, that's not cool, that's chilly. And chilly ain't cool. (1999/Feb 5, 2002)
