This is a movie that shouldn't work. It alternates between quasi-horror and outright comedy seemingly too often to be effective, and contains characters who have no purpose other than comic relief. The humor is also all over the place--there's even a shot from a penis's point of view, one of several silly directing tricks that also shouldn't work. But work the film does. The supporting actors are uniformly, goofily good, and Pamela Gidley exudes just the right amount of sexuality and comic menace. What holds the film together, however, is Malcolm McDowell, who gives a manic performance as a doctor who is truly crazier than any of his patients. (Oct 10, 2000/Oct 13, 2000) | ||||||
