The "birthplace of Texas," with its vibrant and sometimes troubled past, is home to many hauntings.

The Alamo
In one of the most famous battles in North American history, two hundred American soldiers fought and lost against the army of General Santa Ana, a force thirty times their size. Weeks after battle, Mexican soldiers returned to the Alamo with orders to destroy it--and were scared off by spirits of American soldiers. After 1836, the Alamo chapel was partially sold, stone by stone, until the military took over and repaired it. The mission's south wall, also known as the Low Barracks, has seen spirits surface over the last hundred years, especially during their use as a jail in the 1960s.
Menger Hotel
Home of the "best beer west of the Mississippi," the Menger Hotel saw guests the likes of presidents, movie stars, and sports heroes. Now, its disembodied knocking, mysterious slamming doors, and cold spots indicate that it also has guests of an otherworldly nature. The ghost of a chambermaid named Sallie White, who died in 1876 after her jealous husband shot her, is now seen on the third floor in the older section of the hotel. Guests may be startled, but the help is used to her presence. Captain Richard King, a rich steamboat captain and rancher, also used to stay at the Menger when he was in town. He died in the hotel's room 2052 in 1885, but he still walks into the King suite--through the door, of course--to see his old room.
