Although I could have done without some of the clips from the film itself (what cinephile doesn't know the more famous scenes from this epic piece), the behind-the-scenes glimpses are wonderfully informative. It is absolutely fascinating to see the way Jack Nicholson prepares for the "Here's Johnny!" door-smashing scene. It's equally interesting to see Nicholson joke around, pretending to be Boris Karloff (with whom he worked on The Terror), practice his lines as Shelley Duvall follows suit and Kubrick types away in the background. The filmmakers' personalities are revealed as well, especially the earnest Scatman Crothers, sarcastic Nicholson, and sometimes petulant Duvall. If nothing else, this film should dispel the popular idea of Kubrick as a monster on the sets of his films. Instead, he is revealed as a determined, perfectionistic man, but one with humor and concern. A great look inside the making of a classic work.
