From what I understand, Final Destination began its existence as the tale of a Death that literally stalks its victims. Given the sensibilities of former X-Files scribes Glen Morgan and James Wong, it's appropriate that they crafted a subtler version of the story (besides, Peter Jackson did that already--kinda--in The Frighteners). However, in giving the film more gravity, they forgot to give it much levity, and the product is like a Morgan/Wong episode of The X-Files with all of the humor ripped from it. What remains is a smart but thoroughly depressing work. That isn't necessarily a cause for complaint but for the fact that the film is only partially effective in impressing a feeling of impending doom on the audience. All the pieces are here, but it seems hollow to me.
