Not your typical opportunistic Roger Corman knockoff, The Haunting of Hell House has a touch of class and restraint. Only at times does the directing approach the excesses Corman seems to prefer, and the subdued plot is surprisingly involving. Assisted by good performances by both Michael York and Andrew Bowen, this is just about the closest I've seen to a thinking person's C-movie.
