Overall, a good movie, but held back by a badly-acted lead character and a confusing plot. The main complaint that I have is how the LeMerchant Box fits into the movie in any way. Good use of Pinhead as a realistic "devil" character, though he is underutilized. All in all, this is the best direction that I can think of for the series to go, seeing as [how the events of the fourth film] make a straight-up sequel to Bloodline impossible without being incredibly contrived. Plus, this movie reinstates the "mystery" factor to Pinhead that has been lacking since the third movie. (Feb 1, 2001)

This new tale in the puzzle box world is by far the most unique chapter in the Hellraiser series. It does break a few rules that Clive Barker had set in place, but not as much as everyone is saying. The plot is simple, but yet shown in a complex manner that messes with your head like an old Twilight Zone episode. Is it real? Or is it a dream? The best movie I can compare it to is Jacob's Ladder. It is about a cop who is investigating a murder done by a serial killer. He finds the puzzle box at one of the crime scenes, and of course eventually solves it. This is where the mind games begin. Is it Clive Barker material? No, but yet I still feel it holds enough of the characteristics to be recognized as a Hellraiser story. Basicaly, it does not continue from the sequels story line, but yet is more like watching a specific piece of the puzzle box history. Pinhead is not in most of the film, but I feel that is always what made the older movies better. The fact that his presence is always there even when we physically don't see him. He is the mastermind behind the events, and that is good enough for me. Is it different from the other sequels? Yes. Could the story be told without the Hellraiser elements? Yes. Is it a good movie? No, because I feel it is a GREAT movie!!! Sit down, and keep an open mind, and I feel you will be pleasantly surprised. (Feb 1, 2001)
