I really want to like Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. It did introduce me to the strange world of Steve Oedekerk and its Thumb parodies. And there are certainly things in Kung Pow to like. Oedekerk's performance, for one thing--the guy has a gift for physical comedy and is simply a blast to watch. His directing is fast paced, each scene an appreciative nod to the genre he's parodying. Unfortunately, that's also part of Kung Pow's problem. Oedekerk's affection for seventies Kung Fu flicks (as evidenced in his DVD commentary) seems to have prevented him from straying too far from the pacing of the original film. Which may be fine for his fellow martial arts fans, but to the uninitiated, Kung Pow grinds to a halt about halfway through and never picks up again; the writing and editing just can't sustain the comedy. I'd love to see what Oedekerk can do parodying a genre he feels less of a connection to.
