An oddball offering, Ladies Room features two stories that are intended to intersect, but fall a little short of doing so. The first story is almost completely serious and verges at times on pretention; it reeks of undeserved self-importance. Molly Parker does not evoke the sympathy her characther needs to be effective, leaving only Lorraine Bracco's character--powered by a deceptively deep performance--is convincing.
The second tale, a humorous take on the subject that drove the first story--adultery--has a touch that is more assured. Veronic Ferres and Greta Scacci give delightful performances as the mistress and the wife, and John Malkovich properly lends only a slightly manic touch to a role another actor might have overdone. Unfortunately, this is merely consumed by the wraparound scenes, which are set in purgatory--the very scenes that qualify Ladies Room for this site, incidentally. For some reason, the filmmakers decided to present overblown metaphysical melodrama with the production values and approach of bad European soft-core porn. Now there's a dubious accomplishment.
