![]() There are many ways to make an good horror movie, but one of the necessities is having a character or group of characters working against a genuine threat. Leprechaun lacks that. Very little damage is done by the titular creature; our heroes escape with some scrapes and bruises; the worst this bugger can do is stab one of the characters with a pin and trick another into a bear trap. I don't usually encourage sadism in films, even in horror movies, but if Leprechaun wanted to show a little potential, it had to be meaner than it is. Good directing could also have helped to make the little creature seem more evil, but the pedestrian shots reveal exactly what he is: Warwick Davis (Wicket from Return of the Jedi) in makeup. The characters manage to spout a good number hoary horror clichés, including the timeworn classics "it's over" and "he's dead." All attempts at humor fall flat, through the "triumphant" coup de gras line. Although star Jennifer Aniston is no Meryl Streep, even now, Leprechaun came at a time in her career in which she was asked to do nothing but act badly and wear extremely tight denim shorts. She appears to perform both of those tasks willingly and well, and that's the nicest thing I can say about Leprechaun. (Mar 8, 2001) | |||||
