How is this for a combination? Director Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), writer Dan O'Bannon (Alien, Return of the Living Dead) and special effects from John Dykstra (Star Wars). Sounds like a dream come true for any horror fan, eh?
Well, not so fast, my fright-loving friend. Lifeforce, the result of this pool of talent, is little more than a B-movie matinee scare flick with a high polish. Between the questionable acting chops of Steve Railsback in the title role, and a strange nonchalance that seems to pervade the main characters' attitudes towards the earth being overrun by soul-sucking space vampires, this film feels more like a light snack of wafers than a hefty meat and potatoes film.
Watching the film now, one is struck by the number of actors that went on to bigger and better things, and the lovely countenace of Mathilda May as the main soul-sucker. The special effects are quite good, and the dessicated bodies that litter the London streets are fun to see, but the only thing the vampires really steal in this muddled film are two hours of your life.
