It's been said that no one portrayed madmen better than Anthony Perkins (my apology to the critic whose words I just appropriated and whose name I lost along the way). And that's right--if Perkins performed a balanced character, like Norman Bates or his role in Daughter of Darkness. By playing a nutcase who lives in seclusion, Perkins's character loses a very important layer of personality that the odd traits the script gives him (like being in love with a mannequin, for one thing) are a poor substitute for.
