Another example of an all too prevalent theme in supernatural modern horror, Mirror Mirror is too graphic for its own good. There are no scares and few surprises as it retreats the tired old formula of having a supernatural force take over an outcast by promising him/her power/popularity/happiness. The reasons behind the mirror's power are glossed over, and each murder is predictable and therefore not effective. Occasionally, the film strikes a chord in its portrayal of the unpopular side of high school life, but much of that is too exaggerated to be effective. Lastly, the ending, which is supposed to be thought provoking and chilling, just winds up being nonsensical. (1999/Feb 5, 2002) | ||||||
