Released several years before Scream, Wes Craven's New Nightmare introduced a smaller audience to the idea of popular postmodern horror. It was a good idea, but a corny execution--the "overly enthusiastic," let's call it, music and fright sequences that seem to be in the film for little reason. However, even if New Nightmare gets tired of its own postmodern premise by its end, it does scores some strong points for exploring some of childhood's most normal, yet irrational, fears.
