Practical Magic is a quirky film that is dragged down by a major-league identity problem. For a while, it's a comedy. Then it's a tragedy, then a drama. Then a supernatural tale with comedic elements. For about two minutes somewhere along the line, it apes The Frighteners. Surprisingly, it finishes trying to be a parable about female empowerment and unity. What might have been. (Sep 12, 1999)
