The only reason this film got any attention was because it stars a young Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger, neither of whom, I'd imagine, currently include this experience on their resumes. The existence of this film is ridiculous in and of itself; all it does is move the plot of the first Massacre film into the present (or the mid-to-late nineties, anyway) and adds a couple of throwaway changes. Its primary alteration to the plot of the original is the inclusion of an X-Files-type conspiracy that writer/director Kim Henkel stuffed into the plot without success. Even if McConaughey does cut a strangely compelling figure of a backwoods madman, the movie is nearly bereft of danger. I didn't care if anyone made it out alive because I couldn't care less about them, really--this movie was just one tortuous (take that as you will) scene after another. But where the low-budget original pushed the envelope of acceptability, not to mention the audience's sensibilities, this one is just cheap old hat. To its credit, when Renee Zellwegger's character finally decides to show some backbone and become, I don't know, human, Next Generation does flare into life . . . but it's extinguished so quickly. Like within a minute. What a waste.

What originally interested me in watching this movie was seeing the names Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellweger. Having Matthew as a psycho killer was very different from the roles I'm used to seeing him in (like The Wedding Planner and How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days). On one hand, the movie was very scary and kept me up all night, but at the same time, had a weak plot and storyline. I kept
hoping everything would come together in some big explanation at the end, but it never did. There were too many random twists that made no sense. The Leatherface character seemed to just be tossed in for effect and had no real part in the movie. The killers had no motive for terrifying these kids, and and the acting of two of the teenagers left much to be desired. I wish the plot had been explained and tied together better. The movie did scare me, but still had much to be desired.
