A Return to Salem's Lot has a mild atmosphere, an interesting harpsichord score, and some touches of Larry Cohen humor. However, it's so scattered in its approach--attempting humor in one scene, then horror in the next--that it fails to cohere, tonally speaking. It's as if Cohen and company wanted to keep the audience uncomfortable by making a series of clumsy changes to the film's mood. Cohen regular Michael Moriarty is given little to do here, though he's good, but Ricky Addison Reed is just terrible (then again, his role is written without a consistent character in mind). Add this one to the list of bad sequels to King films--it's a distinct letdown after Tobe Hooper's very good adaptation of Salem's Lot.
