An example of some talented people trying way too hard to be funny, smart, and gross, and trying to do all of them at the same time. When Scary Movie's jokes hit, they can hit big. On the other hand, when they miss, they fall really, really flat, and said hit-to-miss ratio is about one-to-one. Some of the humor doesn't even make sense and is in the film just to make as many members of the audience gag as possible. Yet another film that doesn't live up to its potential, but son, you gotta watch it for Marlon Wayans's scene-stealing performance. (Mar 5, 2001)

It was horrible. The humor would only be funny to someone too immature to handle the sex and drugs and violence. I admit, I laughed during the opening scene (hence the half a star), but after that I just felt soiled. I'm Gonna Get You Sucka made me think Wayans could do intelligent, tasteful parodies. Dont expect that here. (Oct 10, 2000)

Information

Followed by Scary Movie 2, despite a tagline of "No mercy. No shame. No sequel."

A parody of the horror and postmodern horror genres.

Scary Movie set all kinds of records in its first weekend, in which is grossed $42.3 million US. To date, it is Dimension Films's biggest opening. It is also the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film, the best opening for an African-American director, and the second-best comedy opening of all time (behind Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me).

The film pushes envelopes in terms of nudity and excretory content, and as of this writing (July 19, 2000), it is rumored that the film may make the MPAA reconsider their R and NC-17 policies. (Of course, people said the same, though for a different reason, of Eyes Wide Shut.)
