After the success of Curse of the Blair Witch, the TV mockumentary companion to The Blair Witch Project, it had to have been a no-brainer for Artisan to make a companion to Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2. Shadow of the Blair Witch presents itself as an actual documentary, following Book of Shadow's conceit that the theatrical film is a dramatization of real murders that were inspired by the popularity of The Blair Witch Project. I'll freely grant that it was a stroke of genius to interweave the "real" Jeff Patterson and company with clips of the actors who played them in Book of Shadows. However, Shadow of the Blair Witch is weak where it needs to be strongest. The staging and acting of some scenes, particularly the newscasts, seems forced and unreal, and the writing has characters saying things that their position or career indicates they wouldn't say. Pseudodocumentaries require absolute realism in the acting, and that's where Shadow falls short.
