The Blair Witch Project

Read the reviews
The first movie in the Blair Witch series is a piece of fiction about three college documentarians who travel into the autumnal Maryland woods searching for the grounds a legendary local witch once trod. Before long, despite the fact that they've prepared with maps, they're lost, and as time goes on, nerves snap and they start fighting--and all the while, something worse than they could imagine waits for them. The media phenomenon of 1999, Blair Witch is pretty close to being a love-it-or-hate-it movie. Reviewer Rocky Wood declared it "undoubtedly the worst film I have ever seen," while Ginger returned with "undoubtedly the best movie I've ever seen." David Cohen declared that "none of these gimmicks can disguise the fact that it is basically a bad movie," while Jack Witzig, TJM, and Philipp Kneis thought it was absorbing.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

Read the reviews
While investigating the facts behind a fictional film called The Blair Witch Project, five twentysomethings spend a night deep in the woods, by the ruins of a house made famous in that film. The next morning, they realize they cannot remember several hours of the night--and that some force has followed them out of the woods. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 attempts to separate itself from its predecessor by acknowledging what the first film was--a work of fiction that redefined how movies can be marketed. It also furthers its predecessor's examination of the interplay of film and perceived truth. Or so some people thought; most critics panned the film. Critic Jack Witzig dissented, feeling that it was full of interesting ideas, great atmosphere, and decent acting, but muddled by barely passable dialogue and studio interference. Philipp Kneis did one better by saying Book of Shadows was "a reminder that the topic of horror is nothing nice, nothing comfortable, nothing to go to bed with at night. It is about confronting an audience used to smoothened fairy tales with the real ugliness which lies beneath the surface of things."

Sticks and Stones: Investigating the Blair Witch

Read the review
Another companion piece to The Blair Witch Project contains "interviews" with people who searched for the three lost students. Reviewer Jack Witzig found this to be a second-rate Curse of the Blair Witch and praised only the way it shed new light on the timeline of the events in The Blair Witch Project itself.

The Burkittsville 7

Read the review
The third companion to The Blair Witch Project, though it aired closer to the release of (and is frequently packaged with) Blair Witch 2. The Burkittsville 7 focuses on only one part of the Blair Witch legend, the child murders thought to be committed by Rustin Parr, and reviewer Jack Witzig found that approach refreshing.

Shadow of the Blair Witch

Read the review
A supplement to Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 in the way that Curse of the Blair Witch was to The Blair Witch Project. Shadow is a mock documentary that treats Blair Witch 2 as a fictionalized recreation of supposedly real events, and features "actual" news reports and interviews with people involved with the case. Jack Witzig thought that all the pieces were there, but that the acting and directing failed to capture the sense of realism that is necessary for this piece to work.
