This film really had something going for it at the beginning. The directing was interesting, the writing smart, and the cinematography gorgeous. The pacing was a little odd, but not so as to be bothersome. Then Christopher Walken's character leaves the action and--bam!--the movie goes to hell. The action stops making sense, characters appear from nowhere, and all attempts at humor, horror, and even triumph all come off halfhearted. It seems almost rushed--as if the filmmakers lost interest in the lengthy backstory they had created and just gave up on the film. (Sep 19, 1999) | ||||||
