January 2008 Meeting - The Green Wave and The Navy: The History of the USS Benfold

The premier meeting of 2008 was held on Monday, January 21st, in the lower level of the Haddon Heights Library. Although the Haddon Heights Public Library itself was closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday, it was opened that evening for the special Haddon Heights Historical Society Meeting.

For the first meeting of 2008, we heard about local war heroes and the impact they have even today, as we hosted Craig E. Burgess, local educator, author and poet, who shared how small town values and patriotism connected the past, present and future US Navy to Audubon, NJ, "The Most Patriotic Small Town In America." Mr. Burgess revealed how Project Memorial, which honored three Audubon Medal of Honor recipients, ignited students, faculty and community to come together in achieving something very special: Establishing a very special monument of the grounds of the Audubon High School. Copies of his book The Green Wave and The Navy: The History of the USS BENFOLD (DDG-65) will be available and signed by the author.

The preceding was adapted from the January 2008 Historical Society Bulletin, written by Ken Funkhouser.
