January 2005 Meeting - 1939: The greatest year in movies

On January 18, 2005, Paul Sofian, film buff and member of the Chestnut Hill Film Group, spoke to the assembled group about 1939, which he claims was, and still is, Hollywood's greatest year. He supported this hypothesis with a slide lecture showing highlights of 1939 films like Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Wmith Goes to Washington, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Wuthering Heights, Gunga Din, Beau Geste, and many more.

Mr. Sofian went to length to make the presentation as interactive as possible, as he encouraged the audience members to pick out the actors in each picture (as they munched on popcorn). Not only was it a night of fond movie memories, but it also served to commemorate the 100th birthday of the Haddon Heights movie house, formerly in the 500 block of Station Avenue.
